D.C. Fair Elections Coalition Experts Available to Comment on Landmark Vote and Petition Delivery Next Week

WHAT: The D.C. Council on Tuesday will vote on the landmark Fair Elections Act of 2017, which passed out of committee unanimously last month. The legislation would strengthen local democracy and make it more inclusive by establishing a limited matching-funds program for candidates running for mayor, attorney general, D.C. Council or the D.C. State Board of Education, amplifying the voices of everyday residents and breaking down the barriers to running for office.

The D.C. Fair Elections Coalition, comprising dozens of local watchdogs, unions, nonprofit organizations, racial justice, economic justice and other public interest groups, will deliver petitions endorsing the legislation to coincide with the vote. The responsibility for bringing Fair Elections to D.C. now shifts to the mayor. The coalition will deliver to the mayor petitions from across the District representing the depth and breadth of support for Fair Elections.

The coalition also will have experts available for comment and a photo op following the vote.
