Wallach has served as a trade policy commentator on CNN, ABC, Fox, CNBC, Bloomberg-TV, C-Span, NPR, and PBS’s News Hour with Jim Lehrer and Bill’s Moyer’s This Week.  She is the coauthor of Whose Trade Organization? A comprehensive Guide to the WTO (The New Press, 2004) and anthologies including Alternatives to Economic Globalization, released by the International Forum on Globalization.

• Globalization 101: What Everyone Needs to Know – A guided tour – in plain English – of the rules and institutions of the global economy, how we got here, what are the measurable outcomes are and what alternatives have been raised.  The alphabet soup of WTO, NAFTA, CAFTA, FTA, BIT, IMF, et al is translated into what it means for people’s daily lives: jobs and wages, access to quality affordable services from education to health care to energy, the environmental implication of these rules, imported food and product safety trends, development in poor countries and more.
• The Untold Story of Trade Agreements: Financial Deregulation – Even many financial regulatory experts were unaware that among the hundreds of pages of WTO binding international law were radical financial deregulation requirements.  Learn how U.S. and European financial firms pushed for these terms in the 1990s – locking in deregulation at home and exporting the model worldwide.  Now, as governments seek to reregulate banking, securities, derivatives, insurance, asset management, pension funds, and more, existing WTO rules pose conflicts.  Onion futures are the only derivatives the U.S. excluded from these rules.)  And, shockingly, the current WTO “Doha Round” negotiations continue with their pre-crisis agenda of more financial deregulation.  Long term financial stability will require changes to the system.
• Today’s Globalization Model Exacerbates the Climate Challenge – The current rules of the global economy promote the concentration of production in low wage economies.  A  recently-leaked UN report found that 7% of carbon emission was related to long distance trade-related shipping.  Meanwhile, trade pact agriculture rules incentivize intensive, industrial production over less environmentally impactful approaches.  Meanwhile, WTO procurement, service sector and other terms conflict with some of the key energy and other policies promoted to combat climate change.  Some argue that the cap and trade system itself is a WTO violation.
• Public Interest Careers – Lori is constantly asked by young people how she came to do the works she loves.  This talk combines her personal story – and the many professional development lessons she learned along the way – with a review of the type of public interest jobs available and how to approach finding one.
