About our Commercial Alert Program

Public Citizen’s Commercial Alert program works to protect communities from growing commercialism. We believe that commercial culture must be kept in its proper sphere, and that we must protect children, families, education and government from its eroding influence. A special focus is to stop the marketing of infant formula in hospitals and among health care providers. In addition, we fight to keep commercial advertising out of schools, reduce the marketing of unhealthy products to children, and stop the increasing commercialization of our government.

About our Congress Watch division

Public Citizen’s Congress Watch division champions consumer interests before the U.S. Congress and serves as a government watchdog. We engage in public education and advocacy, and are focused on the following:

- Strengthening health, safety and financial protections. Our work in this area covers consumer financial protection, patient safety, single-payer health care, consumer product safety, auto safety and worker safety.

- Ensuring access to the courts to hold corporations accountable for wrongdoing. Our work in this area covers forced arbitration, whistleblower protections, medical liability, preserving state consumer laws (pre-emption) and court secrecy.

- Strengthening our democracy by exposing and combating the harmful impact of money in politics. Our work in this area focuses on money in politics, government ethics, lobbying reform and open government.

About our Democracy Is For People Project

The mission of Public Citizen’s Democracy Is For People campaign is to limit the influence of money in politics. Our primary goal is to pass a constitutional amendment to overturn the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United, which allowed corporations to spend unlimited amounts of money in elections. We believe that the government should serve the voters, not corporate interests and the wealthy few. We focus on building a grassroots movement to demand change. Overturning Citizens United is our top goal, but we also are working to curb the influence of money in politics in other ways, including pushing for an executive order requiring companies that do business with the federal government to fully disclose their political contributions, and calling for public financing of elections.

About our Health Research Group

Public Citizen’s Health Research Group promotes research-based, system-wide changes in health-care policy and drug safety. We work to have unsafe or ineffective drugs and medical devices banned or re-labeled, to reduce worker exposures to hazardous chemicals and generally to curb industry’s influence over regulators. We educate the public about dangerous drugs and drug interactions through our newsletters and WorstPills.org, and push medical boards to do a better job disciplining doctors. We are an ardent champion of a single-payer, Medicare-for-all system.
