Trade in the 2006 Elections: Campaign Ads
SenateAd transcript: Mike Bouchard’s attacks against Debbie Stabenow? False. Stabenow voted to toughen our borders. Social security for illegal immigrants? Never. That’s why she’s endorsed by the National Committee to Preserve Social Security. And Stabenow voted no on the Bush guest worker bill that threatened our jobs. Mike Bouchard? He supports the Bush economic plan that cost Michigan jobs. Unfair trade, outsourcing jobs, privatizing social security – Michigan can’t afford Mike Bouchard. Ad transcript: They work hard, they love their country, they play by the rules. But the cars, steel and appliances they used to make are now being made overseas, where workers are paid 3 or 4 dollars a day. My opponent supported the trade agreements that cost us these jobs; he says, it’s just business. I say, it’s wrong. I’m Sherrod Brown, I approve this message, and in the Senate, I’ll judge U.S. trade agreements by this standard: are they fair to America? Do they put Americans first? Ad transcript: They said that NAFTA would be good for America, but nearly 50,000 Ohio jobs have gone to Mexico. CAFTA, the trade agreement with Central America, will cost us even more. Our trade policy with China has cost our country over a million jobs, huge trade deficits, and it’s risking the transfer of sensitive military technology. I voted against all of these deals; my opponent voted for them. I’m Sherrod Brown; I approve this message; it’s time to put Americans first. Ad transcript: They work hard and love their country. And all they ask for in return are leaders who are on their side. Does Mike DeWine measure up? He voted for trade deals that sent jobs overseas. He voted for tax breaks for corporations that outsource. DeWine voted against overtime pay protection, against a higher minimum wage – nine times – and for a China trade policy that cost our country countless jobs. Ad transcript: If you think the middle class deserves better, ask yourself: does Mike DeWine deserve another chance? DeWine brags about supporting the Mexico and China trade deals that cost us jobs. He voted for tax breaks for corporations that outsource, even those that move plants overseas. So out of touch, DeWine voted against tuition tax credits for the middle class, and against a higher minimum wage – nine times. Sherrod Brown (OH-Sen): (see Version 1 or Version 2) Ad transcript:
Ad transcript: With time running out, Mike DeWine is recycling discredited attacks newspapers have called “junk” and “trumped-up charges.” Fact is, Sherrod Brown’s passed dozens of bills that became law. He led the fight against job-killing trade deals; opposed tax breaks for corporations that outsource; took on the drug companies to lower health costs; and worked for tuition tax credits for middle-class families. Mike DeWine turned his back on the middle class on each of these issues. Ad transcript: Before I ask for your vote, I owe it to you to tell you where I stand. I’m for an increase in the minimum wage, and against trade agreements that cost Ohio jobs. I support stem cell research, tighter borders, and a balanced budget amendment. Sherrod Brown stood up to the president of his own party to protect American jobs, fighting against the Mexico and China trade deals that sent countless jobs overseas. Ad transcript: (images of Santorum on screen) Ad transcript: What happened in Washington? Millions of jobs lost; the largest deficit ever; an arrogant government out of touch. Pennsylvania deserves a Senator in step with Pennsylvania. We need someone fighting for fair trade laws that don’t give away our jobs. Someone who will stand up against the partisan politics in Washington. Someone who’s fiscally responsible, who balances the budget just like you do, every day of your lives. We can do better in Washington, and we will. Ad transcript: In just five years, 180,000 Pennsylvanians have lost their manufacturing jobs. Over 700,000 lost their health insurance. I’m Bob Casey, and it all started right there (points to Capitol). If you give me the chance as your Senator, I’ll oppose any trade law that sends American jobs overseas. I’ll work to expand health care for children and businesses. And no more Congressional pay raises until Congress raises the minimum wage. Our country needs a new direction. That’s why I approve this message. Ad transcript:
Bernie Sanders (VT-Sen; long version): Ad transcript:
House of RepresentativesAd transcript: The book on Max Burns and the middle class: Ad transcript: Georgia is losing jobs faster than any other state. That’s why John Barrow voted against bad trade deals that send our jobs overseas. And it’s why John Barrow voted to make illegal immigrants felons. Max Burns voted for two trade deals that send our jobs overseas. Max Burns supports CAFTA, even though it’s already cost us jobs. He even voted against raising the minimum wage. Max Burns: he’s not on your side. Ad transcript: Bruce Braley learned the value of hard work early in life. His father had been injured in a grain elevator accident, so his mother went back to teaching to support their family. To put himself through college and law school, Bruce washed dishes and drove a dump truck. As an attorney, he’s fought for those who’ve worked hard but lost their jobs and pensions. Now Bruce Braley is running for Congress to raise the minimum wage, fight for fair trade laws, and expand the use of ethanol. DCCC vs. John Hostettler (IN-08): Ad transcript: Communities crumbling, families struggling: too many local jobs are being sent to foreign countries. What’s Congress doing? John Hostettler voted to reward companies that outsource, supporting $25 billion in tax breaks for corporations, including those that ship jobs overseas. He even voted to expand NAFTA, which cost Indiana 30,000 jobs. If he’s not looking out for our jobs, then Hostettler just isn’t doing his. Ad transcript: Big corporations enjoy record profits by shipping our jobs overseas, leaving factories like this one empty. I’m John Yarmuth, and it’s time we put government back on the side of working people. I’m running for Congress to protect our jobs, raise the minimum wage, help local businesses expand, and stop illegal immigration. Because there should be a job for every American, and an American for every job. Ad transcript: I’ve never understood the term “special interest.” They shouldn’t be special, and I don’t find them interesting. Trouble is, we have real problems in this country, and Congress isn’t listening to anybody else. If I’m given the chance to go back, I’ll have a lot of work to do. We need to balance the budget, like we did before; stop rewarding companies for shipping jobs overseas; raise the minimum wage; and support alternative energy so we don’t have to rely on foreign oil. Now that would be interesting. Ad transcript: Tom Reynolds: his campaign and ads are funded by multinational corporations that are outsourcing our jobs. Now they’re attacking Jack Davis. Tom Reynolds said yes to CAFTA, yes to China and goodbye to 40,000 western New York jobs. They get our jobs, and Reynolds gets more money from the outsourcing companies. Reynolds says he’s creating jobs – in Beijing? Jack Davis says, stop giving our jobs away. Ad transcript: Charles Taylor’s negative ads are being called “reprehensible” and “absurd.” Taylor’s desperate to hide the fact that he keeps selling out our families. Taylor voted to cut student loans for American families, but used our tax dollars to create scholarships for Russian students. Taylor skipped a critical vote to save thousands of American jobs, but got an award for creating jobs in Russia. Mr. Taylor, American families should come first. Ad transcript: Congress doesn’t seem to know right from wrong, but we do. It’s not right when big insurance companies write health care laws and millions can’t afford to see a doctor. It’s not right when big oil companies write energy laws and gas prices skyrocket. It’s not right when Congress passes trade bills that send our jobs overseas. Congress won’t change until we change the people we’re sending to Washington. Ad transcript: Bob Taft and Bob Ney’s handpicked candidate, Joy Padgett. Padgett: part of Taft’s administration. The Padgett-Taft record: 228,000 Ohio jobs lost, the biggest tax hike in state history. Breaking the law, job losses, corruption: the Ney-Taft-Joy Padgett record. Zack Space is different. Space signed a pledge to refuse gifts and trips from lobbyists. Zack Space will oppose all trade deals that cost Ohio jobs. Ad transcript:
