Take Action To Clean Up Diesel Emissions in Texas

Thankfully, there are a host of measures that can be used to reduce the health impacts caused by diesel pollution – we just need to make sure that they are put to use!

  • School and transit buses should be equipped with closed crackcase filtration systems to reduce diesel exposure to children and other passengers in the bus cabin
  • Use of ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel
  • Retrofitting existing diesels with diesel particulate filters
  • Specifying emission levels for public works contracts
  • Setting and enforcing anti-idling ordinances
  • Truck stop electrification programs

Write a letter to your school administrator to educate them on the use of closed crankcase ventilation systems to reduce diesel exposure to children.

Send a fax to your congressman asking that they support a federal goal of reducing diesel particulate emissions by 50% by 2010, by 75% by 2015, and by 85% by 2020.

Reducing diesel particulate emissions to this level will save 100,000 lives across the U.S.

  • Send a letter to Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson asking that she bring the issue of emissions from Mexican trucks and diesel emissions at Texas ports to the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee.

  • Ask your state legislators to support the successful Texas Emissions Reduction Program by increasing funding, implementing vehicle testing, increasing the use of low sulfur fuels and addressing the issue of Mexican trucks.
