Advisory Committee on Regulatory Reform

On June 8, 2001, HHS Secretary Thompson announced a Department-wide initiative to "reduce regulatory burdens in health care and respond faster to the concerns of health care providers, state and local governments, and individual Americans who are affected by HHS rules." To that end, on December 26, 2001, Secretary Thompson announced the appointment of twenty-seven members to a new Advisory Committee on Regulatory Reform. At that time, the Committee was charged with identifying and prioritizing regulations for reform, and recommending improvements to "remove regulatory barriers." The Committee’s final recommendations are expected in fall 2002.
