Public health, safety and environmental regulations enable Americans today to enjoy relatively safer automobiles and consumer products, purer food and drinking water, clearer air, more reliable drugs and medical devices, and safer workplaces than in the past. However, the Bush Administration is working to weaken government agencies, such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), which are charged by Congress with crafting regulations that protect the health and safety of the American public and the environment. Public Citizen is committed to preserving these protective safeguards and preventing the "regulatory rollback" advocated by the Bush Administration and supported by business and industry interests. Public Citizen acts as a watchdog, overseeing congressional, executive branch and federal agency actions affecting the regulatory process, alerting the public and Congress when safeguards are threatened, and encouraging Congress to enact legislation that puts public health, safety and the environment first. |
