ACTION ALERT:

Stop President Bush and Congress from Privatizing Medicare!

No improvements to Medicare ONLY through private health plans!

No “incentives” to force people on traditional Medicare to join HMOs!

WHAT’S HAPPENING?

Proposals from the Bush administration and its allies in Congress to “reform” and/or “modernize” (read “privatize”) Medicare will leave seniors and people with disabilities without guaranteed, affordable, and reliable health care, exposing their families to financial crisis.  Rather than make traditional Medicare better, they want to turn most, if not all, of Medicare over to private insurers and to force people on Medicare into HMOs.

President Bush called for these changes to Medicare in his State of the Union speech on January 28.  The fight over his Medicare privatization proposal is likely to play itself out initially in the fight over prescription drug coverage for people on Medicare.

WHAT YOU CAN DO– MAKE JUST 3 QUICK PHONE CALLS:

Contact your two U.S. Senators and one Member of the U.S. House at 202/225-3121 and tell them that you strongly oppose President Bush’s ideas to privatize Medicare and turn it over to private insurance companies, which will limit your choice of doctors.

Tell them how you (or people you know) rely on traditional Medicare’s guaranteed benefits and don’t want them taken away, watered down, or made more expensive -- as would surely happen if Medicare were turned over to private insurers.

Once you have contacted your Senators and House Member, let us know the reaction you received.  Send your replies by e-mail to agreener@citizen.org or to April Greener, Public Citizen, 215 Pennsylvania Ave. SE, Washington, D.C. 20003.

Share your story:

Share your friends’ and family’s personal stories about Medicare with us.  The Medicare Rights Center(one of our partners) is creating a story bank to explain to the press and public why traditional Medicare needs to preserved, strengthened, and improved.  Let us know how Medicare has been helpful to you or someone you know, or how Medicare’s shortcomings have been a problem.  Please send your stories to: kglaun@medicarerights.org
