No irradiated beef requests to the USDA for the 2005-06 school year

This spring, the Food and Nutrition Service of the USDA conducted a nationwide survey of school districts this spring to find out which school districts are interested in ordering irradiated meat products for the 2005-06 school year. The answer: no school districts have placed orders! This lack of interest is a significant change over last year, when a number of Texas, Minnesota, and Nebraska school districts placed orders for irradiated ground beef (although they never received the irradiated product because of the high price).  At the end of the summer, we will follow-up with the USDA to make sure that no school districts have submitted last minute requests for irradiated product, but the results of this survey are a very good sign. Read their response to Public Citizen.
