On February 10, 2006, SCANA Corporation (the parent company of South Carolina Electric and Gas Co) and state-owned Santee Cooper announced their selection of Summer nuclear station near Columbia, SC, as their preferred site for building one or more new nuclear reactors. On March 31, 2008, the companies submitted an application for a Combined Operating and Construction License (COL) to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). The application seeks approval for two reactors that would use the Westinghouse AP1000 pressurized water reactor technology. The AP1000 is a 1,100 MWe pressurized water reactor design the NRC certified in 2006. The agency is currently reviewing a Westinghouse application, submitted in May 2007, to amend the certified design. To view the application click, here.
