UniStar Nuclear Consortium

Announced on September 15, 2005, UniStar is a business venture formed to fascilitate design certification, siting, licensing, construction, and operation of a fleet of new nuclear power plant in the U.S.  The plan is to build a reactor design known as the U.S. Evolutionary Power Reactor, a new design that is based on a reactor now under construction (but not yet completed) in Finland. UniStar has applied for a combined operating license at both Nine Mile Point in New York and Calvert Cliffs in Maryland. Additionally, UniStar has assisted with application preparation for combined construction and operating licenses at sites in Missouri and Pennsylvania.

Constellation Energy

Purchased its third U.S. nuclear reactor, the R.E. Ginna plant near Rochester, NY, on May 28, 2004. In addition, Constellation owns Nine Mile Point, also in upstate New York, and Calvert Cliffs in Maryland.  Constellation is also a member of a second nuclear consortium called NuStart Energy Development.

Electricité de France (EDF)

This French company is 80% owned by the French government. It owns shares in several U.S. reactors, as well as 58 nuclear plants in France.  It owns 50% of UniStar, and also 9.5% of Constellation Energy.

Bechtel

Provides operating services to many U.S. nuclear plants, as well as the Yucca Mountain repository site, the Hanford site in Washington state, the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL), and the Nevada Test Site. Also a member of a nuclear consortium led by Dominion Resources, which is seeking an Early Site Permit and Combined Construction and Operating License at its North Anna, Virginia site.

AREVA


This French company is a multi-faceted nuclear technology player with several subsidiaries, such as Cogema and Framatome ANP, positioning themselves to be a major part of a nuclear relapse.  AREVA is involved in uranium mining, enrichment, and fuel fabrication, reactor design, construction, and maintenance, interim nuclear waste storage, and large-volume electricity transmission and distribution.
