Internships with Public Citizen's Energy Program

Please Note: We are no longer accepting applications for Summer 2009 internships Thank you for interest.

Public Citizen is a nonprofit consumer advocacy organization that accepts no government or corporate support. Public Citizen's Energy Program was founded in 1974 to oppose nuclear power and promote cleaner, safer energy alternatives. Our work involves organizing on the state and local level, researching and writing studies, monitoring relevant federal and state agencies, lobbying members of Congress, testifying in Congressional hearings, initiating litigation, and working with the press and citizen groups nationwide. To learn more about our work, visit our website at: www.citizen.org/cmep.

Internships

The Energy Campaign works to protect people from the dangers of nuclear energy and radioactive waste and to advocate for policies which will lead to safe, affordable and environmentally sustainable energy.

Duties: Our internship program emphasizes substantive projects. These often include researching and writing a report on a policy matter or corporate player. They may also include helping in a lobbying campaign, working with the media, and/or providing assistance to local organizations.

Key components of the Energy Program internship include:

  • Developing the Energy Program’s online outreach. Potential projects include a Facebook page, a YouTube video, blog and other online outreach media.
  • Providing research support. The intern will search and review original documents (e.g. on-line databases, Library of Congress resources, and documents from governmental and non-governmental agencies) as appropriate to fulfill research requests.
  • Assisting the Energy Program Organizer.   Duties may include responding to information requests from the public; developing briefing papers, reports, fact sheets, and other educational and lobbying materials; and aiding with legislative campaigns, coalition building, and media strategies.

Supervision: Each intern is assigned to work with a member of the Energy Program staff who will provide general supervision and serve as a resource. Given the nature of our work, it is important that interns have the ability and the desire to work independently.

Qualifications: Strong research and writing skills; good communication skills; some knowledge of the political/policy making process; and non-profit volunteer or other experience. Interns must be self-starters who are committed to the protection of the environment and consumers.

Prefer: Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Access), internet, email, and other software packages.   We expect interns to be efficient, responsible workers.

Stipend: There is a stipend for the Summer internship positions. The Fall and Spring internships are UNPAID positions.

Duration: At least 8 weeks, full- or part-time, to be negotiated on a case-by-case basis.

Location: Our office is on Capitol Hill, about two blocks from the U.S. Capitol, across the street from the Library of Congress. METRO accessible.

Deadline: Rolling until filled. Applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible.

To apply: Send us a cover letter (which includes your availability and which campaign you are interested in); your resume; and a short writing sample.  Emailed files can be sent in MS Word, Wordperfect, or pdf formats.  Send your materials to:
