United Nations World Summit on Sustainable Development 2002

The 2002 Sustainable Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa

The World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa is expected to draw people from all corners of the world from Aug. 26 - Sept. 4, 2002. The Summit is ideally set to draft the development plan for the sustainable future of our planet. Many organizations, governments and businesses have spent months preparing for the event. The last sustainable conference was hosted by Rio de Janeiro, Brazil ten years ago. But instead of ten years of progress in the direction drafted at the Rio Summit, the Johannesburg Summit is heading towards confrontation and failure.

Countries hosting the event often use such large meetings to boost their international image. In the case of the World Summits on Sustainable Development it is interesting to note that the two host countries, Brazil (1992) and South Africa (2002) top the list of inequality between the rich and poor. In fact, they are both competing for first prize.

Instead of setting an agenda for an alternative development agenda that would improve our environment and eradicate the vast economical differences that are ripping our world apart, the agenda is merely enforcing the rules that are part of the problem. Instead of sustainability we are approaching breakdown due to impeding corporate interests.
