How to Submit a Letter to the Editor
- Letters should be 250 words or less.
- Most newspapers will only publish a letter that refers directly to a recent article published in that paper.
- Sign the letter and print your name, address and phone number. Most papers will call you for verification before publishing the letter.
- Follow the instructions on the editorial page of your local newspaper when submitting your letter.
- Emphasize 2-3 key points. Don't try to cram all your reasons into a small space. It's more effective to choose one angle and elaborate with facts or anecdotes.
- When your letter is printed in a newspaper, send a copy to your senators and representative in Washington, DC. They are very sensitive to how they are portrayed in the local media and the issues on peoples' minds.
