Every twelve minutes someone dies in a vehicle accident in the U.S., making vehicle crashes the leading cause of death for Americans under the age of 35.  Despite these alarming figures, the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration receives only 1 percent of the Department of Transportation’s Budget.  Highway safety should be one of our country’s top priorities.  Through improved safety standards, better technology, and driver awareness, thousands of lives could be saved each year. 

The Auto Safety Group has been a part of Public Citizen since 1971. We work to improve highway safety by lobbying Congress to pass critical legislation, monitoring the Department of Transportation to be sure it carries out the will of Congress, conducting public awareness campaigns on critical issues, and participating in lawsuits to force government action when necessary.

	New Roof Strength Rule is Dangerously Inadequate: Public Citizen Pressures NHTSA to Improve The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently proposed the first change in vehicle roof strength standards in more than three decades. Despite over 10,000 rollover deaths each year, the proposed rule would require vehicle roofs to be only marginally stronger than they are today, and is so grossly inadequate that 70 percent of existing vehicles will require no increase in roof strength at all.
