Vehicles & SafetyEvery twelve minutes someone dies in a vehicle accident in the U.S., making vehicle crashes the leading cause of death for Americans under the age of 35. Despite these alarming figures, the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration receives only 1 percent of the Department of Transportation’s Budget. Highway safety should be one of our country’s top priorities. Through improved safety standards, better technology, and driver awareness, thousands of lives could be saved each year. The Auto Safety Group has been a part of Public Citizen since 1971. We work to improve highway safety by lobbying Congress to pass critical legislation, monitoring the Department of Transportation to be sure it carries out the will of Congress, conducting public awareness campaigns on critical issues, and participating in lawsuits to force government action when necessary. Because Public Citizen does not accept funds from corporations, professional associations or government agencies, we can remain independent and follow the truth wherever it may lead. But that means we depend on the generosity of concerned citizens like you for the resources to fight on behalf of the public interest. If you would like to help us in our fight, click here. |
