Crash Test Ratings:
Other Safety Information:
Several sources offer vehicle safety information. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) both crash test a limited number of vehicles. In most cases, the safety ratings show a vehicle’s crash test performance ratings above and beyond the government’s minimum safety standard. Be aware, however, that the NHTSA rollover ratings are awarded even though no minimum safety standard for rollover yet exists. A low-scoring vehicle on the rollover ratings may be a very dangerous vehicle indeed. Click here for additional information on rollover safety and for Public Citizen’s comments on the government’s rollover rating system. IIHS also offers an analysis of death rates for particular vehicle models on their Web site and Consumers Union offers auto safety information on its Web site. Additionally, “The Car Book” by Jack Gillis and Consumer Reports offer both safety and consumer information. Gillis’s book can be purchased here and Consumer Reports is here.
