Reauthorization bill to be considered by Senate could drastically reduce deaths in crashes involving SUVs.The Surface Transportation Reauthorization Act of 2003 (TEA-3), passed out of the Senate Commerce Committee on June 26, 2003, contains long-needed and substantial safety rules that will reduce deaths in crashes involving SUVs. The rollover propensity minimum standard and rollover crashworthiness measures will reduce deaths for occupants of SUVs, and the aggressivity reduction measures will reduce deaths in other vehicles struck by SUVs in crashes. Vehicle load capacity labeling requirements will educate consumers about the carrying capacity of vehicles and thereby prevent rollover crashes related to overloading.
On February 26, 2003 the Senate Commerce Committee held a hearing on SUV safety.
