Support Pro-Consumer Bill in CA

Support California Bill to Curb Dealership Scams

This spring, California Assemblywoman Montañez launched AB 1839, the Car Buyer's Bill of Rights.  The bills, supported by Public Citizen and the California advocacy group Consumers for Auto Reliability and Safety (CARS), would curb dealership scams through:

• Providing a three day cooling-off period for consumers to cancel a vehicle sales contract and receive a refund;
• Creating standards for “certified” used vehicles with a qualified technician performing the inspection and certification while prohibiting the sale or advertisement of “gray market” vehicles, “salvage” vehicles, “lemon buybacks,” or odometer rollbacks as “certified” vehicles;
• Making dealers clearly disclose to consumers information regarding the consumer’s credit score, available interest rates and the cost over the lifetime of the loan for any add-on items; and
• Tightening the prohibition on car dealers receiving compensation from financial institutions for arranging auto loan financing.

AB 1839 is a definite first step in the right direction for the California legislature.
