The Fair Elections Now Act (H.R. 1826) would allow candidates for Congress to choose voluntary public financing instead of getting bankrolled by big corporate interests. More than 125 representatives have signed on to sponsor this important bipartisan legislation, but that means more than 300 need a nudge from their constituents to put voters first.
Sign the petition: Sen. Dodd, tell Wall Street you have another dance partner
Recently, a financial industry lobbyist said because Sen. Christopher Dodd (D-Conn.) is retiring, he is now free to “dance with the special interests that brought him to the dance in the first place. Us, his loyal donors in the banking community." In fact, Dodd is now free to do the right thing and hold the banksters accountable. Dodd should send a clear message to Wall Street that he has another dance partner – the people who are struggling through the Great Recession.
Ask your senators to support real financial reform
Congress is considering legislation to create a Consumer Financial Protection Agency to guard us against misleading and unfair credit cards, loans and mortgages. The big banks are spending hundreds of millions of dollars on lobbyists and public relations firms to oppose real consumer protections. Your senators need to hear from you about the need for reform to rein in Wall Street and allow our economy to grow sustainably.
Stand up for victims of sexual assault and discrimination
Urgent action needed! We helped pass Sen. Franken’s (D-Minn) amendment to bar defense contractors from forcing employees with sexual assault and discrimination claims into arbitration. But now, as the House and Senate negotiate a final version of the Department of Defense Appropriations Act (DOD Appropriations bill, H.R. 3326), Senate leaders are considering weakening the amendment by leaving discrimination victims unprotected.
Tell Congress to focus on patient safety
Instead of focusing on real reform in the health care bill, members of Congress have been distracted by health industry lobbyists. The Senate is considering "alternatives" to our right to hold negligent providers accountable when they cause severe, permanent injuries or death. Tell them to say no to health industry lobbyists seeking more immunity for negligent providers.
